Grapefruit – “Forbidden Fruit” – “One of the Wonders of Barbados” – was first described in 1750 by the Walesian botanist-priest Griffith Hughes. Later, the grapefruit was called “little shaddock” because of its resemblance to the pomelo, which was then called sheddot, and in 1814, Jamaican traders renamed the fruit grapefruit.
